Materials (exact amounts)

  • 100 g baking soda
  • 60 ml water (4 tablespoons)
  • 250 ml white vinegar in a spray bottle
  • 1 plastic or silicone spatula
  • 1 sponge and 1 microfibre cloth
  • 1 pair of rubber gloves

Step by step

1.- Switch off the oven, unplug it and wait until it is completely cold. Remove the trays and racks.

2.- Mix 100 g of baking soda with 60 ml of water into a thick paste, like soft butter.

3.- Spread the paste with a gloved hand over the walls, floor and inner glass, in a layer about 3 mm thick. Avoid the heating elements and fan openings.

4.- Let it work for 12 hours, for example overnight. You will see it darken as it absorbs grease.

5.- Remove the paste with the plastic spatula and a damp cloth, in gentle circles.

6.- Spray 250 ml of white vinegar on the remaining baking soda: it will foam. Wipe with a clean cloth, rinse with water and dry.

Why it works

Baking soda is mildly alkaline, helps soften grease and, as a paste, works as a gentle abrasive. Vinegar is acidic and, when it reacts with baking soda, forms bubbles that help lift residue.

Safety and precautions

Do not use this method on ovens with catalytic walls or special coatings without checking the manual. Never mix vinegar with bleach, because it gives off toxic gases. Wear gloves and ventilate the kitchen.

Common mistakes and how often to repeat

Do not do it with a hot oven. If there is a lot of grease, repeat the process. For maintenance, clean the oven every 2 or 3 months or when you see stains.
